Along with generally building things badly they also decided to avoid putting markings on the cam gears and crank for TDC. Making a home replacement impossible without specialist tools and some balls. I imagine they did this on purpose to extract money from people at their stealerships.

Edit: also the crank is apparently keyless, excellent...

They are indeed. Every french car I've worked on has been a complete nightmare.

I hear ya. Even changing a headlamp bulb on a damned Megane Mk2 is a ruddy mission.

Yup I had to pull some contortionist stuff to get the bulb out. My mam has one she's trying to sell that has all kinds of issues. Was considering doing the timing belt to either help get it sold or buy it cheap off her and keep it but it'll be £250 minimum just in parts and tools. Then there's the door that fills with water that we cant work out even after refitting every seal... Fuck renault.

Yup, the french car manufacturers are expert douchebags.

Not just them though. Changing a headlight on many modern small cars can be a nightmare requiring the removal of all manner of bits and pieces. And that's nothing compared to the windscreen washer pump should you be so unfortunate as to need to change one.

True, though some have been surprisingly easy many have been an arse.

Why so much for the timing belt? Is it one of those expensive special tools? If so, you can often hire one instead of buying it outright.

With the water in the door, does the door not have drain holes at the bottom? Maybe they're blocked.

The kit with water pump, pulleys tensioners and what not isn't cheap. Then to lock the cams you have to remove end caps which you have to order too along with sealant to refit them. Then a plug to lock the crank and a u tool to lock the cams. Then other odds and ends it definitely passes 200. I could maybe make the u tool to be fair and save a little.

We cleaned drain holes along with most of the innards of the door. The water also broke the window motor which slackened the cabling which means the window had to be clamped in place too. I could fix it eventually but it was a daily so didnt have time.

Thing is a complete basket case.

I used to have a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, and in order to have enough room to change one of its headlights I had to completely remove the battery. Good times.

At least you could get the battery out. I had occasion to look at a Focus recently and I couldn't imagine how the battery would be extracted short of taking an angle grinder to the surrounding bodywork.
